What is an Internet domain

What is an Internet domain

The internet domain of a web application is the equivalent of a physical address of the server where our service is hosted. It is made up of two main elements, the domain name and the extension.

The following example makes it easier to understand:

Our main URL is openwebinars.net, which is made up of the website name (openwebinars) and the extension (.net).

When someone registers a domain they can choose both the name and the extension, as long as it is available. After registration, we will have the rights of use having to renew it from time to time, usually annually.

As a curiosity, certain data can be extracted from a domain using WHOIS, a TCP protocol used to query a centralized database. The answer to this query allows obtaining a series of data about the domain. Sometimes it even allows you to determine the owner of a domain.

How does a domain work?

As mentioned, domains are used to access a web page without having to remember the IP address where the server information is located. When a URL is written in the browser to access a certain website, the Domain Name Systems or DNS are responsible for translating the web domain to the correct IP address.

This translation is necessary because it is easier to remember the address of a website in text format than a numerical string, an IP address, providing easier navigation.

You can do a kind of experiment with Nslookup, a tool used to find out if the DNS service is correctly resolving names and IPs. This command, nslookup, works on both Windows and UNIX and allows you to get the IP address knowing the name, and vice versa.
