types of domains

 






Have you ever wondered how many domain extensions there are on the Internet? To begin with, a domain is the name by which your website will be searched for on the Internet. There is a domain suitable for all types of companies or environments.


It is divided into three groups, which are:


• Generic Top Level Domains (gTLD, generic Top-Level Domain)

• Geographic Top Level Domains (ccTLD, country code Top-Level Domain)

• Third Level Domains.


Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)

These types of domains are the most used domains in the world and best known for being the most common, they are not suitable for a specific country, their termination defines the concept of use of these:


• .com = Commercial Site

• .net = Internet Service Company

• .org = Non-profit organization

• .info = Informative site

• .biz = Business site


Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD)

They are the domains associated with a specific country or territory, and are made up of 2 characters. For example, the .mx domain is the one assigned to Mexico.


Some other country code top level domains are:

.ar – Argentina .ch – Switzerland .co – Colombia

.br – Brazil .cl – Chile .de – Germany

.ca – Canada .cn – China .es – Spain


Third Level Domains.

These domains are a combination between the gTLD types and Geographic Top Level Domains, the scope of these domains is delimited by the country or territorial domain. Some examples of third level for Mexico are:  best hosting services

• .net.mx – Network Providers

• .org.mx – Non-profit organizations

• .edu.mx* – Educational Institutions

• .gob.mx* – Government Entities
